More than 80 police officers used batons and capsicum spray to control a massive late-night brawl in Melbourne's CBD which blocked off streets, stopped traffic and delayed trains and trams.

Five people were arrested after a drunken fight began outside Flinders Street station just before midnight, Saturday.

A second brawl broke out at nearby Swanston Street, which was blocked by fight.

It is believed men and women provoked officers at the scene, who were trying to control the brawl.

People were seen staggering and crying, some of them affected by capsicum spray.

Metro Trains were forced to delay some services and Swanston Street trams were also affected by the chaos.
