'That's a strange looking cow': Lost seal found on NSW farm

An adventurous New Zealand fur seal has perplexed farmers by emerging from a creek at a NSW south coast farm, 14 kilometres away from the ocean.

The seal was spotted in Jellat Jellat, about seven kilometres south east of Bega, by resident Corrie Shepherd, as it emerged from a creek and made its way across a paddock.

"I thought that's a strange looking cow," Ms Shepherd told the Bega District News.

"He came out of the creek, which makes sense."

National Parks and Wildlife Service rangers were able to safely catch and transport the lost seal, before releasing it into the river mouth at Mogareeka, a nearby coastal town.

National Parks officer Grant Brewer said they had no option but the capture the seal, the ABC has reported.

"We thought it wasn't a good option to try herd it back into the creek so we thought we'd go to plan B, and catch it," Mr Brewer said.

The rangers said the animal had been spotted swimming in Bega Creek in the days leading up to its capture.
