Gang raids underway across Sydney over underworld murder plots

Several police raids are underway in Sydney involving heavily armed officers over gang violence, and a series of killings that were being plotted by underworld figures.

Pictures filmed by 7 News show one of the operations near Sydney Olympic Park.

It is not yet known if the plans were related to a spate of underworld killings across Sydney in recent months.

Pasquale Barbaro, a notorious Sydney gangster linked to the Mafia, was shot dead in Earlwood on November 14 this year. Both his grandfather and cousins were killed in historic gangland murders in past decades.

Barbaro’s death came weeks after the slaying of Hamad Assaad at his Georges Hall home, which in turn followed just over a month after Mehmet Yilmaz was shot dead at point blank range.

The May slaying of Adrian Buxton at Colyton, the April killing of criminal kingpin Walid Ahmad at Bankstown and the killing of Safwan Charbaji have also been linked to the bloody saga.

Michael Davey, believed to be a member of the Rebels motorcycle gang, lost his life to the underworld bloodshed on March 30 after having survived an attempt on his life the previous year.

Mark Easter, another Rebels member, was also killed on June 26, 2015, when he was shot several times in the head in what police called an execution.
