‘It’s all gone’: BBQ explosion destroys newlyweds' home

A Sydney couple have been left devastated after their barbecue exploded and destroyed their new apartment.

Marcia and Razmig Meguerdijian were connecting the gas bottle to the barbecue when it suddenly exploded.

The flames engulfed their second floor balcony and wrecked their new unit, which was uninsured.

"I heard the first explosion, then the second explosion, then the third explosion,” Ms Meguerdijian told 7 News.

The force of the explosions left the apartment in pieces. Windows were shattered and Christmas decorations dissolved into the carpet.

Thankfully, the new husband and wife managed to escape, along with 30 of their neighbours.

Keyi Yuan, who lives in the apartment block, said: “We called triple zero and then suddenly it exploded”.

Firefighters contained the blaze and stopped it from spreading to neighbouring apartments, which could have been catastrophic in this large unit complex.

In just 20 months, firefighters have been called to 60 incidents involving gas cylinders.

Superintendent Paul Johnstone from NSW Fire and Rescue, said people need to check everything.

“Check the connections are right, check the cylinder for rust and deformities and check the use-by date”.
