Vandalism attack: Political statements sprayed across Melbourne Magistrates Court walls

Vandals have plastered the Melbourne Magistrates Court with graffiti, spraying political statements about refugees and demanding life jail terms for our worst offenders.

Black block letters were sprayed across the front walls and windows of the William Street building about 11.30pm Sunday night, police told Yahoo7.

"CHILD MOLESTS RAPIST MURDERS PUT IN JAIL FOR LIFE," was one of the messages left for cleaners to remove Monday morning.

Another said: "FREE REFUGEES FREE REFUGEES."

"The incident was reported to police by security this morning," Victoria Police said in a statement.

Cleaners worked quickly to remove the graffiti from the courthouse walls on Monday morning.

The courthouse attack comes a month after the Andrews Government promised Victoria’s worst criminals would be jailed, with no chance of walking free on a community-based order, under tough new laws.

The new legislations mandate jail for the 10 most serious crimes, including murder, manslaughter, rape, kidnapping, abuse of a child under the age of 16, intentionally causing serious injury, and trafficking or cultivating a large commercial quantity of drugs.

"If you commit a gross act of violence, if you commit a heinous crime, you shouldn't be the subject of a community corrections order," Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews told 7 News last month.

"The previous government got this completely wrong. We will fix their mess and that's exactly what these changes are designed to do," he said.

Crossbench senator Derryn Hinch has been publicly outspoken about using his time in Parliament to push for a public register of convicted sex offenders.

In his first parliamentary speech, the newly-elected senator told the cabinet he would use his parliamentary privilege to name and shame convicted child sex offenders, arguing Australians had the right to know who was living in their neighbourhood.

Earlier this month, the Senator alleged a Brisbane primary school covered for a year two teacher after he was convicted of sexually abusing a student for several years.

Police are investigating the graffiti attack, however no one has yet been arrested in relation to the incident.
