Cyclist killed after being hit by truck in Geelong

A cyclist has died after being hit by a truck and dragged under the vehicle as he rode along a main street in Geelong.

The man, aged in his 40s, was riding along Ryrie Street about 8.10am on Wednesday when he was struck as he attempted to move across the road, police confirmed.

A witness described the scene as "messy", while pictures from the scene show the man's mangled bike under the wheels of the truck's trailer.

Seven News understands the cyclist's leg became caught and he was dragged for some time.

The driver of the truck, a 58-year-old Portarlington man, was not injured and stopped to render assistance.

The pedestrian was rushed to hospital with life threatening injuries, but died on arrival.

Traders in Geelong's CBD said the horrific incident was an accident waiting to happen.

"We were only saying the other week it was only a matter of time until someone gets killed," barista Laura Ballantyne told AAP.

"Not even just the trucks - cars as well screech to a stop at the lights."

In another crash the same morning, a driver was killed after a mini-bus drove through an intersection and into a light pole in Ballarat about 9.45am.
