Not welcome! Prime Minister banned from Sydney Mardi Gras

Australia's prime minister has been formally banned from Sydney's Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras as an official guest.

The move is in protest against Malcolm Turnbull’s failed plebiscite on same-sex marriage.

A motion was passed to scratch him from the list at an official meeting for the event on Saturday.

The motion stated the: “Annual General Meeting of Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras does not believe that a prime minister who denies us equality should be welcome as an official guest at our parade”.

“We ask the Board to act in accordance with this position and issue a public statement as it applies to the current Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and the 2017 Mardi Gras parade and does not invite him as an official guest to the parade.”

The Prime Minister can however still turn up at the world famous parade and mingle in the streets, but not as an official guest.

Earlier this year Mardi Gras board director James Brechney was censured for demanding Turnbull be taken off the invitation list.
