Trump takes aim at Clinton and his wife during charity dinner roasting

One day after the fiery final presidential debate, political rivals Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton have roasted each other at the annual Al Smith Dinner.

Trump kicked off the New York event joking that the gathering was Clinton’s "largest crowd of the season".

He took aim at her private email controversy with the secretary of state saying that after she bumped into him she said: “pardon me”.

Clinton threw her head back laughing at the sledge.

Cardinal Timothy Dolan played peace-maker between the pair, who sat almost side-by-side, surrounded by political and business leaders.

Trump earned plenty of laughs for his jokes but eventually crossed the line to deeply personal insults aimed at Clinton.

He was booed when he described Clinton as “corrupt”.

He also hit Clinton for “pretending” not to hate Catholics as she sat at the Catholic charity event.

"Some people are saying that last night was the most vicious debate in history. Are we supposed to be proud of that?" he asked.

"Last night I called Hillary a nasty woman. This is all relative. After listening to Hillary go on and on and on, I actually don't think so badly about Rosie O'Donnell anymore.

“This is the first time ever that Hillary is sitting down with major corporate leaders and not getting paid for it.”

He also joked about himself, referencing claims his wife had stolen parts of a speech from the first lady.

"Michelle Obama gives a speech and everyone loves it, and then Melania gives exact same speech and people get on her case."

"I'm in trouble when I go home tonight," Trump said.

Clinton fired back with a joke about taking a break from her “nap schedule” then had a quip about the price of her speeches.

"It's amazing I'm up here after Donald. I didn't think he'd be okay with a peaceful transition of power," she said.
