Man extradited from Tonga over Sydney cold case murder

A man has been extradited from Tonga today and is expected to be charged over the alleged 1990 murder of Sydney woman Rita Caleo.

The 49-year-old man arrived in Sydney this morning after police travelled to the South Pacific island earlier this week to arrest him.

Mrs Caleo, 39, was stabbed to death in her Double Bay home, while her two young daughters were sleeping in the adjacent bedroom.

Her brutal murder is also believed to be linked to the death of her 36-year-old brother, Sydney doctor, Michael Chye, who was fatally shot three times just under a year earlier as he drove into the garage of his Woollahra home.

Strike Force Nichola was established by the homicide squad’s unsolved homicide team to investigate the deaths of the brother and sister.

Police confirmed that one of the suspects has been living on the South Pacific island since he was deported from Australia over a string of robbery offences in 1997.

It is believed that Dr. Chye’s death was motivated by a soured real estate deal worth millions of dollars.

The extradited man remains at Surry Hills Police Station, where he is expected be charged with murder in coming days.

New South Wales police said further information will be available later today.
