Man in police custody over alleged St Kilda axe attack

A man is still in custody over the alleged axe murder of a man whose body was discovered inside a St Kilda halfway house on Monday.

Earl Jones, 29, was arrested at a Fitzroy Street, St Kilda, hotel on Wednesday afternoon after a two-day manhunt.

Police made a public appeal to find Jones after the body of 45-year-old Stefan Lovic, also known as Stephen Lowrey, was discovered in Little Grey Street.


A neighbour told Homicide Squad detectives they heard yelling told between two men and there was an altercation prior to the body being located.

Detective Inspector Mick Hughes said the St Kilda victim lived alone and that it was a targeted attack or possibly involved someone known to the victim.

"This, certainly from the scene, appears to be a targeted attack," he said.
