Melbourne resident sprays street in bid to stop hoons
A Melbourne woman could face a fine after painting the speed limit on her street in a bid to deter hoons.
Tahanee Paterson said drivers reach speeds of up to 80km/h on her residential street northeast of Melbourne, but the Knox council has refused to act.
“Somebody’s gotta do something before somebody’s child is killed,” she said about her street in Ferntree Gully.
After the council refused to install speed limit signs or speed bumps on Roberts Street, Ms Paterson did the job herself.
“That cost me $9 in spray paint,” she said.
“Is it working? Yes, I believe so.”
Ms Paterson’s neighbours agreed the street had become “dangerous” and supported her cause.
“When she said she was going to do it, I said ‘go for it’,” neighbour Robert Head said.
Knox council said it “strongly discourages” people taking matters into their own hands.
The council said a recent traffic assessment showed the number of cars on Roberts Street was lower than the residential average, and said the issue of hoons is no worse than anywhere else.
“I will continue to paint the road,” Ms Paterson said.
“And next time I’ll do it bigger and brighter until somebody takes notice.”
