'Chicken lady' lives in NSW home filled with animal faeces
An elderly woman who let her home become overrun by chickens says she couldn't bear to turn any of the birds away out of fear they'd be killed.
Moira Macmilllan has been dubbed the 'Chicken lady' after she allowed an estimated 50 chickens to live inside her Bungendore home in NSW.
In what started as an attempt to stop her neighbours complaining about the chicken noise outside, Ms Macmillan now has only her bed to escape the bird waste which is littered throughout her home.
Featured on SBS program Insight on Tuesday night, Ms Macmillan admitted she's embarrassed by how overrun her home has become.
"According to society, I shouldn't have (the chickens) inside," she said. "They've overwhelmed me."
Ms Macmillan said she first allowed her chickens inside to keep the peace with her neighbours. But when she allowed roosters into her home, for fear they'd be attacked by cats and dogs, 10 chickens soon turned into 50.
Vision of Ms Macmillian's home shows feathers and bird waste in what appears to be every corner of the home.
"I only sit in the bed. I don't sit unless I sit out on the verandah," she said.
"I think that's what happens with anyone who hoards - it just builds up."
Despite seeking help from a doctor, Ms Macmillan still wants to keep her chickens inside to save them from what she says is a certain death if they are left back outside.
