Sydney Trains employee struck and killed by train

A Sydney Trains employee was struck and killed by a train while carrying out maintenance work early Saturday morning.

The man was hit by a NSW TrainLink Blue Mountains service between Clyde and Auburn, heading into Sydney shortly after 6am whilst "carrying out important maintenance work," on the T1 Western Line, Sydney Trains confirmed in a statement.

"We're greatly saddened by the tragic news this morning and our deepest sympathy goes out to the family and friends of the employee," Sydney Trains Chief Executive Howard Collins and NSW TrainLink Chief executive Rob Mason said in the joint statement.

"Sydney Trains is working with authorities at the scene to determine the cause of the incident," Mr Collins said.

"The safety of our workers is our top priority and this incident will be fully investigated by the relevant independent authorities."

Mr Collins said he has notified Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Andrew James Constance of the tragedy, and the minister "has expressed his heartfelt condolences for the family during this difficult time".

NSW Police are preparing a report for the Coroner and the incident is being investigated by Safe Work Australia.
