Taxi windscreens smashed in a bizarre cricket bat attack in Melbourne CBD

A rampaging man used a cricket bat to smash the windows of six taxis in an unprovoked attack outside Melbourne's Southern Cross Station.

The bizarre attack occurred around 10am on Monday sending terrified drivers ducking for cover.

Shocking footage shows the man bashing the cars one by one with a cricket bat.

A bizarre message was written on the bat, claiming that the rampage was inspired by Osama Bin Laden.

One witness stated, “It was written on the bat there that this is a terrorist attack for Osama Bin Laden.”

“All of a sudden, bang, the front windscreen,” another witness told 7 News.

“He walked up to me very calmly and he smashed the rear window of my car as well.”

The man chose one of Melbourne’s busiest taxi ranks to take out his anger and the attack appeared indiscriminate with some cars having their front windscreens smashed, others the back, and in some cases both.

“It was very eerie how cool, calm and collected he was,” another witness said.

“He would go and rest against the car, he’d stop for a few minutes, then he’d start again.”

Minutes after the spree ended, the man was arrested on the footpath by police and taken for questioning.

It is expected the 25-year-old suspect will be charged Monday night.
