Large fire erupts on Melbourne school campus

A large fire erupted inside a building at a Melbourne school this morning as emergency services work to get it contained.

The blaze started at Wesley College, Glen Waverley just before 5.30am on Wednesday morning.

The fire has been contained however school classes has been cancelled for the day.

The fire started inside a building known as 'The Atrium' in the centre of the middle school campus. It's believed it measures about 50m.

The fire was significant, with those on scene describing it as ‘lit up like a Christmas tree’.

Residents reported hearing loud explosions this morning.

25 fire trucks were seen at the scene this morning.

The Age reports Waverley Road, Medina Road and Lemair Avenue were closed.

The Metropolitan Fire Service advised people to avoid the area, but there is no threat to the community.

A large amount of smoke was seen in the area, and people are advised to close windows and doors.

Wesley College's Glen Waverley campus has approximately 1200 students from age three to year 12.

The campus is situated 20km from Melbourne CBD.

There is no indication as to the cause of the fire.
