Brave police officers save seven people and nine puppies from fire

A pair of brave police officers have saved seven people and nine puppies from a burning home in Western Sydney.

Officers patrolling in St Marys spotted the house fire at 6.45pm on Saturday.

They bravely put their own lives at risk to conduct the rescue which included five children aged under five.

It took a dozen firefighters to put out the blaze and get everyone to safety.

Neighbour Rosemari Lynch told 7 News: "I saw a massive cloud of black smoke and I thought 'gees that's close to home' and I thought it was my house, but it wasn't, it was the house next to me."

One of the firefighters was injured while helping to extinguish the blaze and has been taken to Nepean Hospital in a stable condition.

A crime scene has been established at the house and investigations into the blaze are continuing.
