It is understood missing man Daniel O’Keeffe’s father, Des, found the bones under the family house at Summerhill Terrace in Highton, about 1.50pm on Monday.

While police are yet to confirm if the remains are Daniel's, a statement written by his family and friends on Facebook said that the remains did belong to their beloved boy.

"It is with heavy hearts that the family and friends of Dan O’Keeffe, update this page to share that Dan’s remains were discovered earlier today," the post from the O'Keeffe family said on Monday evening.

"We ask that you keep our family in your thoughts as we navigate this process and that our privacy be respected."

Daniel’s family believe he was suffering from depression and anxiety at the time of his disappearance.

The man was believed to be on foot when he was reported missing, without his ID or wallet. His bank accounts have not been used since.

Almost five months after Dan went missing, he was spotted at a south-east Queensland medical centre going by his middle name, James.

His parents Lori and Des spent the next two months searching Queensland for their son.
