'Just married': Runaway groom leads police on a high speed chase
A groom on the run in a wedding car led Tennessee police on a highway chase last Thursday, with the intense pursuit recorded on dashcam video.
Police chased the speeding SUV along a motorway, with the words “just married” sprayed on the back windscreen, but it’s unclear if the driver was running away from his wedding, a new marriage, or he was simply in a hurry.
An officer headed to work on Thursday night noticed the Chevy Equinox swerving along the I-40 motorway and tried to stop the driver.
But the man behind the wheel refused to pull over, and instead turned toward the patrol car and took off, narrowly missing it.
The driver, believed to be 27-year-old Michael Smith, darted across exit ramps then back on to the highway at high speed in an attempt to evade police.
He swerved out of control when the car made a sharp turn, then continued to drive erratically across several highway lanes.
Not even crashing into guard rails and a concrete barrier stopped him.
The driver finally slowed and came to a stop in a restaurant car park, where police caught up with him.
He was arrested and charged with evading arrest, reckless endangerment, and reckless driving.
