The storm began about 3pm, bringing heavy rains, damaging winds and large hailstones.

The downpour caused major traffic woes as vehicles were caught in the deluge.

Streets were flooded, footpaths became rivers, and parked cars were submerged. Traffic was reduced to a crawl as the city became awash.

V/Line advised passengers that coaches may be delayed due to heavy rain and flooding near the station.

The Bureau of Meteorology said the storm was caused by a string of extremely humid days, with a low pressure system west of Geelong.
