Garbage truck driver allegedly high on ice when couple were struck down
The driver behind the wheel of a garbage truck involved in a shocking accident on the Gold Coast was allegedly high on ice at the time.
Less than a month after a couple were hit by the truck, the pair have spoken about the traumatic event that was captured on CCTV.
Steve and Jodie Jackson were both rushed to Gold Coast university hospital following the shocking accident.
Steve Jackson has spoken out about the tragedy revealing his wife Jodie doesn’t remember the accident.
“The force was incredible, I do remember being hit by the truck. It seemed to come out of nowhere, I turned, it was baring down on top of us, it was very close, I remember trying to protect us."
"There was just no chance to get to safety. I didn't feel pain initially and it just sort of came out of no where in a wave it was excruciating."
"Jo has got a long way to go, she's hit the road very hard and has got significant fractures to the back of the skull."
Even more tragically he has also revealed that his wife is having trouble speaking and remembering life before the accident.
Jackson reportedly told other media outlets that his wife of 15 years can barely recognise him and their children.
Jodie who suffered a fractured skull, brain damage and internal bleeding is due to be released from hospital today.
She was transferred to a brain injury rehabilitation centre in Brisbane where she will undergo continuing treatment.
Steve Jackson was discharged from hospital earlier in the week suffering two broken legs.
The accident occurred late last month when the family were on their annual holiday at Burleigh Heads.
The shocking incident was captured on CCTV footage showing the moment the two pedestrians were hit by a large garbage truck as they attempted to cross busy stretch of road.
The pair were struck by the truck on the corner of Goodwin Terrace and Gold Coast Highway.
