Scooter rider fined $71 for riding through Sydney Harbour tunnel

A scooter rider who rode through one of Sydney’s busiest tunnels has been fined $71.

Footage emerged of the 42-year-old man riding his scooter through the Cross City Tunnel around 3.45pm on Tuesday.

ABC News reported he handed himself in to Surry Hills police, admitting that he was the person in the video.

Foot scooters, skateboards and rollerblades are all illegal to use on roads with speeds greater than 50 kmph, under NSW law.

Drivers could not believe what they were seeing on Tuesday, as the man nonchalantly cruised through the tunnel on his scooter.

The risky move held up traffic, with motorists slowing down as they approached the man.

“It was really dangerous. I don't know what this guy was thinking to do that in that place…especially at four o’clock,” witness Alberto Flamigni told 7 News.

In a statement, Police said the incident was a reminder to all drivers to act safely on the roads, ABC News reported.

"Regardless of how the person came to be in the tunnel, their safety was at risk and there was potential for him to be hit or to cause a crash," Acting Assistant Commissioner Smith said.
