Six people killed in 33-vehicle pile-up on Chinese highway
At least six people have been killed in a 33-vehicle pile-up caused by heavy smog on a highway in north China.
The incident involved several collisions on a motorway in Shanxi province on Tuesday morning, leaving a mass of cars battered and damaged on top of each other.
Images of the pile-up also give an indication of the surrounding smog.
Local meteorologists had warned it would be so severe that visibility would be reduced to as low as 500 meters.
Northern and eastern parts of China have been shrouded by a heavy smog in recent days, leading authorities to issue ‘a red alert’ – the most severe warning - for the capital Beijing.

Tuesday’s accident also left four people in hospital with serious injuries, the Daily Mail reported.
