Former President George W Bush stunned a Texas court on Wednesday when he turned up for jury duty, proving that even an ex-commander in chief cannot shirk his civic obligations.

He was not chosen for the panel in Dallas, but did have his picture taken with onlookers before leaving.

Bush spokesman Freddy Ford confirmed the 43rd president's appearance to the Dallas Morning News.

One of the jurors, Sheri Coleman, told the newspaper that the 69-year-old's visit was "awesome".

"He was very personable, very friendly, just, 'hey I'm here to serve.' He asked questions and was very nice," she said. "I loved it."

Another potential juror said he was surprised to find the former president right behind him at the 14th civil district court.

"I turned around and he was seated right behind me and I said, 'I think I know that guy,'" Joel Ehambe told the Morning News.

Mr Bush was driven off by Secret Service agents.
