A US baseball fan has managed a once in a lifetime catch, grabbing a flying bat out of the air with one hand while protecting his wife and his beer.

The Minnesota man known only as ‘Alan’ pulled off the catch in the stands last weekend as the St Paul Saints took on the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks.

During the match a RedHawk batter swung and missed, letting his bat fly into the crowd.

When the loose bat came flying towards a woman in the crowd, her husband reached across his body and effortlessly plucked it from the sky to shield her.

Fans who saw the act rose to their feet to applaud the man as he gestured to the beer he was still holding.

Seemingly amazed by what he’d done, the man snagged a kiss from his wife, Jody.

Jody later took to the Saint’s Facebook to tell the crowd about her husband’s catch.

'I felt like it was coming at us in slow motion but it certainly wasn't,' she wrote.

‘He just put his hand up and snatched it right out of thin air like he had velcro on his hand. Insane.'

While Alan handed the bat back during the match, Jody said the team later gave him a practice one as a memento.
