Medical miracle: Man survives near decapitation in car crash

By every count, Tony Cowan shouldn’t be alive.

The 29-year-old, from Durham in the United Kingdom, was nearly decapitated when his car spun out of control and hit a telephone pole in September last year.

“His head was snapped off from his spine, there was only tissue and muscle holding his head on,” his mother Pepsi Cowan told the Daily Mail.

“We were told by medics at the RVI that Tony had sustained the most cruel of injuries."

Tony’s devastated family was about to turn off his life support when he miraculously woke from a coma.

Doctors were able to reattach his skull using a metal plate and bolts and despite being almost entirely paralysed, Tony retained full brain activity.

Now his family is trying to raise money to get him out of rehabilitation and into a specially adapted house.

Tony’s wife of 10 years Karen Dawson said she wanted her husband to be in the comfort of his own home.

“We are going to give Tony as much a normal life as possible, we have assured him we will be there for him ever day, and he will never be alone,” she told the Daily Mail.

“I love him so much and it would mean the world to me to get him home.

The family said the money raised would be used to provide Tony with physiotherapy sessions for his limbs.

“We would like to provide Tony with an electric bike that will stimulate his limbs, stopping him from getting muscle weakness and stiffening up.

“We would also like a tilt table which is good for him. However, these two items are out of our budget, and we are asking for help and support to give Tony some quality of life.”

Tony, who has learnt to communicate through blinking, mouthing words and using an electric board told the Daily Mail he can't wait to return home to wis wife.

“I love Karen with all my heart and I can't wait to go home to get back to the life I had.”
