Fake Campbell Newman tweeter Iain Fogerty sees public nuisance charges dropped

Public nuisance charges have been dropped against a man who ran a parody Twitter account of former Queensland premier Campbell Newman.

Iain Fogerty, who went by @Can_Do_Campbell on Twitter, was wearing a T-shirt reading "I'm with stupid" when he allegedly heckled and pushed Liberal National Party (LNP) volunteers in Fortitude Valley during the state election campaign in January.

The charge was due to be heard in the Brisbane Magistrates Court Wednesday morning but was dismissed after police prosecutors offered no evidence to support the charge.

Mr Fogerty said the LNP volunteers should have grown spines instead of calling the police.

"As a born and bred Queenslander, I clearly remember the history of the Joh [Bjelke-Petersen] years but never had expected to relive those years myself in 2015," Mr Fogerty said in a statement.

"They Young LNP members taking the extraordinary, and quite frankly, stupid step of calling the police shows how politically naive and fragile they are.

"If they are unable to cope with someone wearing a shirt with a dumb slogan, then they are clearly not suitable to cope with the far greater pressure that politics will bring.

"I suggest they find a hobby more suitable to their delicate nature and leave elections to those with a more robust spine.

"I look forward to continuing my involvement with the Queensland political landscape."

After 4.5 years and almost 54,000 tweets, Mr Fogerty closed his parody Twitter account, which had 9,000 followers, in February.

He said the Twitter account was started as fun rather than for party political reasons, but he turned against the Newman government after a series of controversial decisions, including the mass sacking of public servants.

The arrest on January 8 drew criticism from federal Labor politician Claire Moore, who had been campaigning on the same street and said at the time that about a dozen police had turned up.

She said there was no violence and Mr Fogerty had just been exercising his political rights.
