Bali Nine vigil: Megan Washington, Jenny Morris among Australian stars to show support for death row pair Myuran Sukumaran, Andrew Chan

A candlelight vigil will be held in Sydney tonight for Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan, the Australian drug smugglers on death row in Indonesia.

Friends of the pair organised the event as they face the likelihood of death by firing squad.

Musicians Megan Washington, Jenny Morris, Paul Mac and Kate Miller-Heidke are among those scheduled to perform at the two-hour vigil in Martin Place.

One of the organisers, artist Ben Quilty, said he wanted the vigil to be held now so the men knew the extent of support for them.

"I don't want the vigil to be on the night of my friends' execution," he said.

"I want the vigil to be before it so that they see and feel how much people are behind them."

Quilty, an Archibald Prize winner chosen by the Australian War Memorial as its Official War Artist, said the event was not designed to influence the Indonesian or Australian governments.

"I don't want to put pressure on any politicians, I don't want to put pressure on the Indonesians and I don't want to put pressure on the Australian Government," Quilty said.

"This is really just about my personal call out to a mate and I would expect that any mate would do the same for me."

Brigid Delaney, from the Mercy Campaign which is lobbying for clemency for the pair, said the show of compassionresonated with many people.

"It also cuts through all different religions, all different backgrounds," she said.

"I don't know anyone in life who hasn't had to ask for a second chance or another go, or [for] forgiveness.

"I think it's an incredibly human thing and my hope would be that it connects with a lot of people."

The two men were convicted in 2005 for their part in a failed heroin smuggling ring known as the Bali Nine.

They applied for presidential pardons after exhausting all other avenues of appeal, with no success.

No announcement has yet been made about when they will be executed.

The vigil begins at 7:00pm in Martin Place.
