Major companies vying for chance to build ACT light rail network

Major transport, finance and engineering companies are vying for the opportunity to build Canberra's light rail system, the ACT Government says.

It has been revealed four consortia of local, national and international firms have put their hats in the ring for the 12 kilometre rail line.

The names of the consortia are Canberra Metro, ACTIVATE, Connecting Canberra and CANGO.

The project will be built through a public private partnership, and among the companies expressing interest are the multinationals Mitsubishi Corp, Leighton Contractors and Macquarie Capital Group.

The ACT Government will now create a shortlist from the four consortia and invite them to submit a proposal for the project.

Eventually a single, private sector partner will be engaged to finance, design, construct and operate the light rail service from the city to Gungahlin.

"Canberrans and visitors to the capital are now one step closer to achieving a modern, frequent and accessible light rail system," Capital Metro Minister Mr Corbell said.

"I look forward to the next stages of procurement and delivery for this important city shaping project for Canberra."

Construction of the light rail line is expected to start in 2016.
