Mother of abandoned baby found in Sydney drain remains in jail

The mother of the newborn baby found dumped in a storm water drain in western Sydney will stay behind bars for at least another two weeks.

The 30-year-old was arrested and charged with attempted murder after the baby boy was discovered at Quakers Hill by cyclists who heard crying coming from the drain last weekend.

Police alleged the baby had been pushed into the drain shortly after the mother gave birth last week and that she intended for him to die.

The child had been in the drain for about five days, and was dehydrated and malnourished when found.

He was discharged from hospital on Friday morning.

The matter was mentioned in court today but the mother, who can not be named for legal reasons, was not required to appear.

Her lawyer did not apply for bail.

The case will return to court on December 12.
