Man admits stabbing man to death in Melbourne's Chinatown, police say

A chef has admitted stabbing another man to death in Melbourne's Chinatown on Wednesday, police say.

Fai Sing Yiu, 59, of Forest Hill, appeared in the Melbourne Magistrate's Court after he allegedly attacked Alan Wong, 64, during the busy lunchtime rush on Little Bourke Street.

The court heard Mr Wong went to see Yiu at the cafe where he worked just before 1:00pm.

After an argument broke out they left the venue and went to the nearby Golden Square car park where Yiu fatally stabbed Mr Wong, the court heard.

Mr Wong died in hospital shortly after the attack and Yiu was arrested at the scene.

The court was also told Yiu was injured during the altercation.

Chinatown is a popular food district in the heart of Melbourne's CBD, and around 100 people crammed around the police tape after the attack happened.

Police have alleged Yiu admitted to the killing.

Magistrate Kate Hawkins ordered the prosecution to gather CCTV evidence and get a DNA report.

Yiu did not apply for bail and was remanded in custody for a committal mention in February.
