Fridge Festival: Chilling out at Darwin's more unique celebration

It is billed as the world's coolest festival and probably one you would never see anywhere outside of Darwin.

The Fridge Festival began on Saturday, when people take old broken down fridges and turn them into pop art.

There were political fridges covered in information about asylum seekers, or designed to get people thinking about global warming.

Others were more light-hearted, with one that was converted into a replica of a yellow submarine and another showing large maggots struggling to push open a door.

Teacher Naomi Waterhouse from Dripstone Middle School said her school's entry had a Ned Kelly theme.

"They decided they would try and make Ned Kelly's armour, his face armour," she said.

Ms Waterhouse said as part of the creation the pupils belted the fridge with a sledgehammer to try and create the effect of bullets.

Artist Josh Amdahl said he wanted his fridge to highlight global warming.

"We thought we would make a fridge that looked like it was melting to try and symbolise humanity's use of everything, from melting ice caps and things like that," Mr Amdahl said.

Those that attended seemed to like the Yellow Submarine entry, but other popular ones included a fridge with giant maggots appearing to be bursting from within.

The Fridge Festival continues at Darwin's Waterfront until November 2.
