Rolling Stones perform to more than 50,000 fans at Adelaide Oval
Rolling Stones fans crammed into Adelaide Oval on Saturday night to experience the first leg of the legendary band's Australian tour.
About 53,0000 punters were inside the stadium while many thousands of others gathered outside on the banks of the River Torrens.
The sold-out show marked the band's promised return to Adelaide after cancelling their performance in March as the official opening event for the oval.
One fan, Rob Padbury, said it was worth the wait.
"With the extended build-up I think there was a lot more excitement about it," he said.
"[We've had] fantastic weather. The oval has been a real success and I think this managed to build on it."
Many fans were impressed by the energy of the seasoned rockers given their age.
"He looks pretty good Mick Jagger," one fan said. "They've still got it."
The band kicked off with Jumping Jack Flash and ended the night with an encore of Satisfaction, which was accompanied by a spectacular fireworks show.
During the encore a man ran onto the stage, but the security guards tackled him and he was escorted off the premises.
The Adelaide show was the biggest they were billed to perform while in Australia and the strong crowd broke the record for the most people at the oval since it was redeveloped.
Extra trams, buses and trains were put on to cope with the masses heading into the city for the concert.
It took more than 200 staff almost a week to set up for the highly-anticipated show.
During a walk-through of the arena on Wednesday, Rolling Stones production manager Dale Skjerseth said the Adelaide stage was the largest he had ever put up and the largest the Stones had played on.
He said the stage arrived in 52 shipping containers from various locations in Europe with the sound system from Sydney.
The 14 On Fire Australian tour will now move on to Perth, before heading to the eastern states.
