Canberra man Ivan Torbert pleads not guilty to frenzied machete attack and threatening to 'finish the job'

A Canberra man has denied carrying out a frenzied machete attack on another man and then phoning the victim in hospital and threatening to "finish the job".

The ACT Magistrates Court has heard allegations 36-year-old Ivan Terrence Torbert from Florey attacked the man as he was checking his bike outside a home in Watson last month.

During the attack the victim's right achilles tendon was cut and a piece of bone broke off after he sustained a deep cut to this left leg.

Torbert was today refused bail after pleading not guilty to intentionally inflicting grievous bodily harm.

Magistrate Peter Morrison described it as a savage attack and said the allegations had to be viewed against a background of Torbert's history of violence and drug use, and previous failure to comply with court orders.

Facts before the court state the incident was sparked by Torbert's belief the man had stolen something from him.

It was alleged Torbert yelled "you're finished" at the other man before attacking him with the machete.

The prosecution also alleged Torbert rang his victim while he was in hospital after the attack and threatened to "finish the job".

He was arrested a week after the attack.

The case will return to court in December.
