Vic rally for women's right to safety.

Speakers at Melbourne's annual Reclaim the Night rally have called for increased state and federal government support for women subjected to violence and harassment.

Organisers say around 2000 people attended Saturday night's protest, on what was the 35th anniversary of the event.

Reclaim the Night spokeswoman Natalie Pestana said one in three women in Australia were victims of violence or harassment, but community and legal services were unable to cope because of chronic underfunding by government.

She said the community believed women had the right to move about freely, without being attacked.

"It's important that we start to change the current culture of victim blaming and shaming of women who experience harassment and violence," she said.

"Tonight the Melbourne community loudly declared that they want a society free from violence and harassment and will continue to make gender inequality and violence against women and children an election priority," she said.
