Stolen CSIRO sculpture worth hundreds of thousands of dollars

A sculpture worth hundreds of thousands of dollars has been vandalised and half of it stolen outside a Canberra CSIRO site.

ACT police are seeking information from witnesses after a bronze disc from the sculpture was taken between 9:00pm Thursday and 3:00pm Friday on Limestone Avenue in Campbell.

The sculpture, titled Il grande ascolto (the great listening), was sculpted by a well-known Italian artist named Arnaldo Pomodoro.

It consisted of two large bronze discs, approximately 80cm in diameter each, mounted beside each other on a bronze base, facing opposite directions.

The sculpture had been in-situ to the left of the main building since 1970.

A staff member noticed on Friday that one of the discs was missing and alerted management.

The sculpture is valued in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
