Inmates charged after NSW barbecue riot
Eleven prisoners have been charged over a riot that broke out in a NSW jail when a barbecue was cancelled.
Officers at Goulburn jail used tear gas to subdue the inmates when the riot broke out on September 20.
Corrective services says the barbecue was cancelled as punishment for inmates verbally abusing prison staff.
No corrective services staff were hurt but four prisoners sustained minor injuries.
Two alleged ringleaders have been transferred to a maximum-security unit for violent institutional offenders at Lithgow Correctional Centre.
The officers involved will be awarded with a Commissioner's commendation for "effective action", said Corrective Services Commissioner Peter Severin.
The 11 men, aged between 19 and 40, will appear at Goulburn Local Court in December.
