Canberra man sentenced over violent home invasion
A man has been given a six-year jail sentence over a violent home invasion in Canberra possibly sparked by a dispute over shoes.
Rian Chistopher Minnis, 29, was convicted of one count of entering a building without consent and two counts of assault causing actual bodily harm.
The ACT Supreme Court heard Minnis entered the property in the early hours of the morning with another man, who has not been identified, and attacked the occupants with a baseball bat.
His unknown accomplice was allegedly carrying an iron bar.
The victim suffered serious injuries including a skull fracture. Minnis also hit another woman on the leg, leaving a large bruise.
The events followed an incident the day before, thought to have been sparked by a dispute over a pair of shoes. But the reason why they were arguing over shoes was unknown.
Chief Justice Helen Murrell described the attack as a very serious crime.
Minnis will serve two years and three months in full-time custody, with a year of periodic detention and the rest of the sentence to be suspended.
