No need for WA donation changes: Barnett

The West Australian premier denies political donation rules need to be tightened after suggestions of impropriety over government-bought apartments in the Pilbara.

Opposition Leader Mark McGowan hounded the Barnett government last week for paying developer Finbar $30 million for 50 apartments in the Pelago East tower in Karratha in 2012, before construction began.

The government has failed to sell 28 of the apartments it put on the market 10 months after completion.

Mr McGowan noted Finbar and its preferred builder, Hassen, donated about $76,000 to the Liberal and National parties before the March 2013 state election.

On Sunday, Premier Colin Barnett said while people might argue with the policy of buying the apartments, government decisions had not been influenced by donations.

He said there was no evidence to suggest anything improper had happened, and the laws allowing political donations did not need tightening.

"If you start to say some businesses can make political donations and some can't, you are going to get into an absolute nightmare web of confusion," Mr Barnett said.
