Woman who bashed elderly bus passenger escapes jail

A woman who assaulted an elderly man on a Gold Coast bus has been given a two-month suspended jail sentence.

Lana Watmough, 21, pleaded guilty to assaulting the 77-year-old visually impaired man in February.

Southport Magistrates Court was shown video of the incident filmed by a fellow passenger.

It showed Watmough and a 17-year-old girl yelling abuse, punching and kicking the man.

Magistrate Gary Finger described the violence as unprovoked and absolutely deplorable.

He sentenced Watmough to two months in jail, suspended for 18 months.

She was also sentenced to 12 months' probation for public nuisance.

Co-accused Lani Cameron remains in police custody and is due to be sentenced at a later date.
