WA premier joins ice bucket challenge

West Australian Premier Colin Barnett has participated in the global ice bucket challenge sweeping social media to raise money for motor neurone disease organisations.

The premier was doused on Friday, thanking sports commentator and radio personality Karl Langdon for nominating him and saying he would always remember it.

"I'm very pleased to be part of it. A few cold shivers is a small price to pay to help out those with motor neurone disease," he said in the Fairfax video.

Mr Barnett encouraged others to take part and make a donation for a "very worthy cause".

"That is cold," he gasped after the bucket of cold water was dumped on his head.

The premier joined the growing number of Australian politicians taking part in the movement, including South Australian Treasurer Tom Koutsantonis and federal Liberal MP Josh Frydenberg.

The challenge aims to raise awareness about motor neurone disease, which causes muscles to shrink and weaken.

Participants who complete the challenge can nominate others to get wet and donate money to charities or researchers.

Mr Barnett has nominated his Disability Services Minister, Helen Morton, who has a family member with the condition.
