Would-be robber flees Melbourne bank

A knife-wielding bandit who attempted to rob a Melbourne bank has fled empty-handed.

The man demanded cash at the Abbotsford bank but ran off when bank staff activated the security system on Wednesday morning.

He is described as 165cm tall with a medium build and was wearing a dark top with a hood.

Meanwhile, a frightening armed robbery has been caught on camera at an Essendon hotel.

Two thieves with a shotgun and wearing balaclavas were captured on CCTV raiding a pokies venue on Keilor Road, shortly after 1am this morning.

The pair escaped with cash.

It is the 11th gaming venue raided in the past three months.
