NSW man charged over fatal crash in 2000

A man who fled NSW after a fatal car crash in 2000 has been extradited from Queensland to face 17 charges.

He was arrested on Saturday at a home at Russell Island in Moreton Bay, brought to Sydney and charged with dangerous driving occasioning death, dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm and 15 other offences.

The charges relate to a collision north of Wollongong in July 2000 which caused the death of a 21-year-old man.

He was thrown from the back seat of a station wagon after it smashed into a tree and died at the scene.

Three female passengers, 16, 17 and 18, were also injured.

The accused man has been refused bail and is due before Campbelltown Local Court on Wednesday.
