Govt to ease Sydney Airport congestion

NSW Roads Minister Duncan Gay has released more details on plans to ease congestion around Sydney Airport.

The state government and Sydney Airport will jointly invest about $500 million to improve access to and from the new WestConnex motorway from the airport and Port Botany precincts.

The plans include the widening of Marsh street, Joyce Drive and General Holmes Drive.

O'Riordian and Robey streets will become one way.

It is reported that about six homes on Wentworth Avenue in Mascot will have to be demolished to make way for a rail underpass.

The Sydney Business Chamber has welcomed the plans saying because the airport is so close to the CBD, which has its benefits, but it also poses traffic problems during peak hours.

The plans will improve freight movements, both interstate and internationally from the airport and the port, it said.

Mr Gay said the Marsh street widening is due to start mid 2015 pending approval while construction on the Enabling Works is planned to start mid 2016.

There will be some disruption to motorists when construction starts, he said.

"From today, the preferred design for work east of the airport is on display at www.rms.nsw.gov.au/roadprojects/AirportEast/ and is being sent to thousands of local residents," he said in a statement on Sunday.
