Two charged over theft and 150km police pursuit

Two men have been charged after allegedly stealing a car and truck, ramming through a security gate and leading police on a chase over more than 150 kilometres.

Police said the intruders broke into the home at Waterloo Corner in Adelaide’s northern suburbs about 1.40am.

Dominic Pellicone, his wife and three sons were woken when the alleged thieves tried to open the security gate with a remote, but accidentally activated the alarm.

“They came in the house, opened the light, took the keys, they tried to open the gate,” Mr Pellicone told 7News.

“Instead of pressing the top (button) for the gate, they pressed the bottom and that set the alarm.

“They got in the truck, rammed the gate with the truck because that’s the only way they would have got out, and the car followed, and they took off.”

The pair dumped the truck nearby and allegedly sped off in the commodore.

Mr Pellicone said he followed the car up several kilometres along Port Wakefield Rd to Bolivar.

Half an hour later police patrols spotted the vehicle on Main North Rd and gave chase, but terminated the pursuit for safety reasons.

The car was eventually followed up the Sturt Highway, through Truro and Eudunda, all the way to Morgan – about 150 kilometres from the owner’s house.

Police said they used road spikes to stop the car, which collided with a police car as it came to rest.

Two men have been charged with aggravated serious criminal trespass, theft and illegal use of a motor vehicle.

Police said the driver had also been charged with driving dangerously to evade police and other traffic offences.
