Severe thunderstorm warning for parts of NSW

A woman has been struck by lightning on the New South Wales Central Coast, as damaging winds and large hail moves towards the south-east.

It's believed around 2000 lightning strikes hit the coast over a two hour period this afternoon.

Meanwhile, two people were trapped after a tree fell on their vehicle at Lansvale in Sydney's south-west.

Emergency crews worked to free the pair near the intersection of Quest Avenue. Luckily they escaped unharmed.

At least 5000 people have been without power on the Central Coast and in Sydney's south, according to Ausgrid.

Winds in Sydney have reached 95 kilometres an hour on the Harbour and on the coast.

The SES is asking residents to move their cars under cover or away from trees, secure loose items around your house, and keep clear of fallen power lines.

They also advise unplugging computers and appliances, avoiding using the phone during the storm, and to stay inside away from windows.

If you need to contact the State Emergency Service call 132500.

Southerly winds and storms are expected to clear overnight.
