South Australia battered by wild wind

Ferocious winds have battered Adelaide and many other areas of the state as storms moved across South Australia.

Thousands of homes lost power as wild winds brought down trees, with the hardest hit areas including Gawler, Highbury, Burnside and Ashford.

Among the victims was a new canopy being installed at Adelaide Oval about 50 metres above the ground.

Squally winds took construction workers by surprise and they were left powerless as the gusts tore the canopy through the main seam.

Riggers were immediately ordered down as a safety measure.

The storm front had earlier left a trail of damage on the Eyre Peninsula when it hit at about 9am on Tuesday, tearing down trees and branches.

Wind gusts of up to 107 kph were recorded at Port Lincoln as the town was hit by the strongest winds there in eight years.

At Wangary, at least a dozen trees were brought down by the vicious winds while at Kelladie Bay, the roof of a shack was blown off and thrown into the ocean.

A damaging wind warning was issued for metropolitan Adelaide, Mount Lofty Ranges, Yorke Peninsula, Kangaroo Island, Mid North and parts of the Murraylands districts at 4.45pm.

"A complex low pressure system will move over the central and southeast parts of the State this evening," the warning reads.

"Strong to gale force winds averaging 55-65 kph with damaging gusts in excess of 90 kph are forecast in the warning area over the next several hours.

"Locations which may be affected include Adelaide, Cape Borda, Maitland, Kadina and Burra."
