The M2 was closed in both directions at Epping after a semi-trailer burst into flames in the tunnel under Norfolk Road.

The vehicle was inside the Norfolk Road Tunnel at Epping when the fire started, around 1.30pm.

It took Fire and Rescue NSW crews about 20 minutes to extinguish the blaze.

One of three eastbound lanes is still closed.

Motorists are being advised to expect delays, and exercise caution.

The cause of the blaze is being investigated.
