Ex cop 'prime suspect' in grandmother's murder

A former policeman has been identified as the prime suspect in the 2011 murder of a Wantirna South grandmother.

Brenda Goudge was killed and her body dumped in a swimming pool in the backyard of her Newstead Way home in July 2011.

Homicide squad detectives investigating the murder have questioned a former policeman who was in the force for more than a decade and knew the 61-year-old victim, 7News understands.

The suspect, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was formally interviewed by police in the early stages of the murder investigation.

The man, who is aged in his forties, has repeatedly denied any involvement in the murder but remains a person of interest.

The former officer had known Ms Goudge for several years prior to her death and it is believed the pair had been arguing in the months before she was killed.

The children of Ms Goudge have made repeated appeals for information to help find their mother's killer.

The victim's son, Adam Goudge, believes the latest development and a police offer of $500,000 should be enough to prompt those with information to come forward.

Police have long maintained that the grandmother of eight would have known her killer.

They said there was no signs of forced entry and the front door and side gates were locked.
