Shop owner stabbed in attack at Oakleigh store

A shop owner has been stabbed for the second time in six weeks at his lawnmower repair store in Melbourne's east.

Police say an unknown man entered the business at Huntingdale Road, in Oakleigh east, at around 8.40am and stabbed shop owner Jason Tate in the stomach.

The father-of-five was taken to the Alfred Hospital where he remains in a stable condition.

"The owner of the shop was the only person inside at the time and was in the rear of the shop," Detective Senior Constable Adam McNamara told reporters at the scene.

"He has walked out thinking it was a customer and has been stabbed."

The victim has told police he believes a man who attacked him with a box cutter at his business six weeks ago maybe responsible for this morning's stabbing.

In the attack on May 29, Mr Tate was approached by an unknown man who asked him for change for a bus ticket as he opened the shop.

When the victim turned to oblige, he was attacked with a box cutter. He suffered injuries to his back and chest.

"There was an incident that occurred here a couple of weeks ago of a similar nature," Det-Sen Constable McNamara added. "He (the victim) believes it's possibly the same offender."

The culprit is described as having short hair, aged in his early twenties, of Greek appearance, and with bad acne.

He was wearing blue jeans and a black t-shirt.

Police have released a face-fit of the man allegedly behind the brazen attack.
