Wayward truck causes gas leak

An out-of-control tow truck has crashed and ruptured a major gas main in Ferntree Gully this afternoon.

Around 30 firefighters were called to the crash on the Mt Dandenong Tourist Road after a truck lost control at a bend and veered off the road, hitting a gas main.

It is believed the brakes failed on the truck, which was carrying a car and towing another vehicle.

A CFA spokesman said the driver struck a 100mm high pressure gas main near Olivette Avenue and came to rest on the edge of the embankment.

Residents were urged to stay indoors as emergency services worked to contain the gas leak.

The driver was shaken but escaped serious injury.
